one month

 

dear George,

true to form, I am writing this post belatedly -- you turned six weeks old yesterday! the first month of your life has felt a bit like a fever dream, with all the noise and mayhem of large family life punctuated by quiet vigils in the wee hours, or afternoon naps when your sisters are at daycare. somehow, each groundhog day of diaper changes and feedings has rolled into the next until suddenly you have grown out of your newborn clothes and your little toes are stretching the limits of your newborn swaddle pods. you've also woken up out of the newborn fugue state where you would sleep anywhere, and you much prefer to take your naps in your own bed (or in the car -- praise the Lord, we have lucked out yet again with a baby who loves the car).

you usually drink six four-ounce bottles of pumped breast milk in a 24 hour period, straight from the fridge, which makes it easy to travel without needing to warm up your bottles. when I pause halfway through your bottle to burp you, you bob your little head around on my shoulder like a desperate baby mole searching for your beloved milk. you love your binky, and sometimes if you're fussy in the evening or the middle of the night, I'll nurse you for as long as you want. you don't transfer milk very well directly from the breast (hence why I'm pumping) but I do love those nursing snuggles, especially since I don't need to worry about if you're getting enough!

you weighed 9 lb 2 oz at your one month (technically 5 1/2 week!) appointment, which is only in the 15th percentile, but still quite the jump from your 6 lb 14 oz birth weight. you generally sleep for a five-hour stretch overnight (sometimes longer!) and then during the day you'll eat every three hours. your personality is very chill and you don't seem to be bothered by all the hubbub around here.

the highlight of your first month was your baptism service! just like Elizabeth and Victoria, you were baptized at St. Anthony's Chapel. the priest brought out a reliquary containing relics of the True Cross and St. Nicholas for your baptism. you didn't make a single peep during the service, including when Father Aron poured the water over your head! what a good boy. then you experienced your first family party afterward, complete with lots of food, drinks, good music, and great friends. 

we love you so much, little man!
